The importance of ensuring member wellbeing during Coronavirus by Charlie

In these difficult and uncertain times, it’s so important for us all to remember to look after each other. As an Executive Committee, our job is not only to ensure our chorus is well-functioning, but also to ensure we do everything we can to support the wellbeing of our members, especially during this pandemic.

Here is what we have been doing to keep our wonderful chorus members at the forefront of our decisions.

Communication is key!

We do everything we can as an Executive Committee to make sure our members know everything that’s going on. We meet every four weeks, as does our Music Committee, and we try to share minutes and decisions from both meetings with members as quickly and transparently as possible.

Creating space for suggestions and feedback

After every rehearsal we are sure to remind members that we would welcome their thoughts and suggestions – this is a new way of being and a new way of rehearsing for everyone, and so taking the time to ask for feedback is important. We’ve also made use of an online survey platform (we use SurveyMonkey), to allow members the opportunity to give feedback. This was in the form of some general questions on how we could best support our members when lockdown first hit, and more recently we have used it to create a ‘virtual suggestions box’ for those who may prefer to give ongoing feedback anonymously.

Opportunities to connect informally

It may seem obvious but the more opportunities for members to connect to each other, the better. Use of our Whatsapp group has soared over lockdown, with members using it to chat, post funny images and videos and to generally keep each others’ spirits up. We still use emails for the more formal bits. And we open up our Zoom meeting half an hour before virtual rehearsal officially starts each week to give people an opportunity to see each other and have a bit of a chinwag if they want.

Our members are the beating heart of Mersey Harmony. And we can’t wait to get back to face-to-face rehearsals together. In the meantime, we’ll continue to keep putting them first.
